Women on the Field is a short documentary that highlights gender inequality in Italian football. Through interviews with former national team captain Melania Gabbiadini and sports journalist/literary critic Sara Zanferrari, the documentary exposes the challenges women face in sports. It addresses issues such as the sexualization and objectification of athletes, underrepresentation and misrepresentation in media, biased language, unequal opportunities for recognition, and the persistent pay gap between male and female professionals. The documentary also explores initiatives aimed at increasing visibility of these issues and supporting female athletes in creating a more gender-equal sports environment.
Complementing the documentary, a paper provides a detailed historical and theoretical analysis, media evaluation, and discussion of media monitoring, presenting elements not included in the audiovisual narrative due to storytelling choices.
